Giver8er 2011

Well, another MTB race in the season. This time right here in Calgary at COP, Giver8er!! 8 hours of endurance, lap after lap with 235mts of elevation gain in 9.5kms.

With all the preceding week raining I honestly thought that the race was going to get cancelled, but Saturday came and with it the rain stopped!. I checked the website for updates about the race and it was still on !!.

I headed out to the course for a pre-ride with my single speed and after a lap I knew I could do it, just needed to change my tires for mud tires just in case and I was ready to ride. Woke up on Sunday at 6:30 and have Andy’s favorite breakfast (whole wheat pancakes with peanut butter, bananas and strawberry yogurt), packed all my stuff, bought a coffee and met super D at the course to set up the tent for the big day.

With a little time to plan the race, I organized all my food and bottles in one corner of the pits. I had 2 bottles with water melon juice (my secret weapon) and the rest with water and sport drinks. We all take off with the gun shot and I manage to stay in the front line with the first 20 riders. Up the hill cranking up those pedal with a 32/18 gear that later in the race I realized it was to small to handle the climbs for 10 laps. My laps went like this: 1st lap 00:37:20, 2nd lap 00:39:35, 3rd lap 00:40:10, 4th lap 00:41:41, 5th lap 00:48:08 (my chain broke first time), 6th lap 00:56:49 (my chain kept coming off until it broke again…), 7th lap 00:45:38, 8th lap 00:48:37, 9th lap 00:48:19, 10th lap 00:45:58.

During the race I ran into Deane, Mike who was doing an awesome job, Richelle and Jason who were all racing, it was nice to see so many terrascapers in the course. Steve was also there in the pits always offering a helping hand and taking some pictures.

Laps went by and as I finished each climb my energy was coming back and my heart rate coming down as well, on every climb I thought it was going to be the last lap, but as soon as I hit the flats and the down hills I knew I could go for another one!!

I finished lap 9th after 6 hours 45 minutes and stopped in the pits to consider another lap, and after talking to Mike and Nicole grab my last bottle of 3 in 1 juice (another secret), a bite of a hotdog that my wife had drop off earlier and hoped into my saddle for what ended up being a 45min lap !! With 10 laps in my single speed, 95kms and after 7 hours and 34 minutes I was ready to get off my bike and go home...
